Chelsea's six Dutch loaners could spark debate in Holland
Chelsea's decision to send six players on loan to Vitesse Arnhem is set to spark a debate within Dutch football.
NEC Nijmegen technical director Carlos Aalbers believes the Dutch authorities should follow the Football League’s lead and shut the loophole that allows clubs to sign an unlimited number of loan players from abroad.
And Aalbers is prepared to bring the issue up at the next meeting of Eredivisie clubs later this year.
Chelsea have sent Patrick van Aanholt, Gael Kakuta, Lucas Piazon, Cristian Cuevas, Sam Hutchinson and new signing Christian Atsu on loan to Vitesse.
The situation is reminiscent of Watford last season, when they brought in 10 loans from Udinese.
As a result, Football League clubs voted to change the rules so overseas loans are treated in the same way as domestic loans. Aalbers would like to see Dutch clubs limited to signing just three players on loan from abroad.
“I want to be clear that I am not judging Vitesse or Chelsea because they are acting within the rules,” said Aalbers.
“But this is a new situation for us in Dutch football and it is worthy of discussion. It is six players on loan from Chelsea at Vitesse, but if this trend continues it could be nine or 10.”
