United Legends 4  – Bayern Munich All-Stars 2

Manchester United Legends defeated Bayern Munich All-Stars 4-2 in front of a crowd of 50,128 at Old Trafford on another fabulous day for the club's Foundation.

A fun family day out was capped by an entertaining 90 minutes with Jesper Blomqvist's late strike ensuring victory was guaranteed, 7-5 on aggregate, after a 3-3 draw at the Allianz Arena last year.

All three of United's starting forwards – Louis Saha, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole – scored in the opening half as the Reds led 3-2 at the interval following a 45 minutes packed with goalmouth action. Yorke had already almost latched onto a fine scooped pass by Ji-sung Park when his cross-cum-shot was beaten out by Hans-Jorg Butt and Saha's shot from the rebound bounced into the corner of the net.

Yorke screwed wide soon afterwards and a rare error by Paul Scholes gifted Alexander Zickler an equaliser as his careless backpass sold Edwin van der Sar short and the striker skipped past the Dutchman to tap into an empty net. Another glaring defensive lapse, this time by Mark van Bommel, who misplaced a header, let in Yorke but Butt blocked with his legs from point-blank range.

Both teams swept forward regularly with Jorginho and Zickler off target for the visitors while Cole spurned a couple of opportunities. After a cheeky long-ranger by Michael Tarnat had van der Sar backpedalling before it drifted wide, Scholes stung Butt's palms with a trademark piledriver.

So it was no great surprise when a flurry of goals arrived before the break. The impressive Quinton Fortune lifted a cross to Park and, although his header was blocked on the line, the ensuing scramble saw Yorke force it in. The lead lasted only three minutes as Tarnat blasted in a free-kick, with the aid of a slight deflection, after it was dummied by Paulo Sergio.

There was still time for Park to tee up Cole with a simple pass and, although the centre-forward's shot appeared to lack the required elevation to beat Butt, the keeper could only touch it in with his right hand. A raft of substitutions in the second half helped stem the flow of goals but the fans were kept entertained as chances continued to be carved out.

Zickler wasted a free header and, after Phil Neville was thwarted by Butt from a tight angle, Bayern's opening scorer should have levelled when nodding wide of an inviting target following Paulo Sergio's free-kick against the bar. Raimond van der Gouw was quickly into the action after coming off the bench as he made two smart stops to deny Marcel Witeczek as the Germans enjoyed a decent spell.

United responded with Andy Ritchie nodding wide and Karel Poborsky curling the wrong side of the far post as gaps began to open up in the visiting defence. Poborsky found space on the right with seven minutes left to centre and Blomqvist wrapped things up with an emphatic finish in front of the Stretford End. The charity was the real winner though and, when the attendance was announced after the final whistle, it was greeted by a huge cheer.
